Kate graduated from Centre College of Kentucky and earned a master's degree in library and information science from the University of South Florida. She has been working in libraries in a variety of positions since 1979, including at Georgia State University, Birmingham-Southern College, Atlanta College of Art, Sarasota County Library System, New College, Florida Gulf Coast University, and Ringling College of Art and Design.

She joined LCF’s staff in 2006 as part-time librarian to help form the Anne and Walter Bladstrom Library, a collection of all things lemur.  She then took on a full-time role as librarian and assistant director for administration, working with Penelope Bodry-Sanders on many of the organization’s publications.  She continues to assist with copy editing and graphic design.
